In Iceland, with a population of only 300,000, can look back a few hundred years to find common ancestors to every inhabitant, making the people of this rough northern island truly one big family. Moreover, the modern Icelander only has to look back two or three generations to discover a sheep-growing farmer in his line of genes. Historically, it is often claimed that without the hardy Icelandic sheep, providing meat, milk and wool, the isolated Icelandic human population would not have survived centuries of hardship and poverty.
